Hong Kong Disneyland expansion 2018-2023

There's finally (probably) some construction on the "new for 2023" Avengers ride which changed into a Spiderman Tower of Terror ride.

Behold the crane!

There's also this quite large building going up in the space between Toy Story Land and Frozen Land. There used to be some temporary buildings on the site, but looking at Google Maps, they must've been cleared a while ago and this new one is going up.

I'm assuming it must be for the new Pixar/Monster's Inc show, which seems to be some kind up upgraded "Tough to be a Bug" type attraction. From Time Out:

"The new Pixar adventure will be an immersive theatrical show centred on the world of Monsters, Inc. that promises to be fun, heartwarming, and ‘unlike anything ever done before at Hong Kong Disneyland’. According to the park, the experience will utilise cutting-edge theatrical technology that blends real and digital environments, so our best guess is it might be something similar to the ‘It’s Tough to Be a Bug’ show at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom (which closed to make way for a Zootopia attraction in March this year, RIP!) or the ‘Muppet*Vision 3D’ show in Disney World’s Hollywood Studios (which also finished its run permanently earlier this year in June after over 30 years) – but likely with less animatronics and updated animation style."

The plot of land is pretty big, so I hope that this is not the only thing they're going to do with it. The black and red gate in the last picture (next to Barrel of Fun on the Google Map) leads to an access road. Frozen has a similar gate (next to the fountain/ice cream place), so I'm guessing these could be used as access points to the new Monster's Inc attraction (whole Pixar land?) as well as a faster way to connect those areas by bypassing Fantasyland.

Starting the construction for the 2023 ride in 2026 is truly a feat that even Six Flags, let alone Disneyland Paris has not managed to achieve yet.

Still strange to me that HK Disney has been seeing continous investments, whilst Disneyland Paris hasn't seen a new ride since... 2006. Maybe all their budget goes into the Hong Kong park?

I think it's because visitor numbers for Paris are already massive, and people are still going regardless whereas Hong Kong is still trying to build those numbers up. Paris has got the new Frozen and Lion King stuff on the way, but it's been a very long time coming. The Hong Kong park is also half-owned by the local government, so Disney only have to pay half the costs. Plus, the "2023" ride should have already been roughly budgeted for when they made the initial expansion plans years ago. That was supposed to cover the costs of the new castle, the Moana show, the Antman retheme of Buzz Lightyear. the Frozen stuff and the Avengers ride. They're also probably more confident in expansion now since Frozen brought in a lot of people and their visitor numbers are the healthiest they've ever been.

Yeah, that sounds kind of reasonable. On the other hand, other Disney Resorts do also pull numbers, and they keep getting new additions. I agree that Studios/Adventure World needed some significant improvements, and even after Lion King opening in 2035 it will still lack the number of attractions other parks have.
Its just odd to me that Disneyland was supposed to never be completed, yet Paris is close of being 20 - TWENTY years without receiving a new ride.

What happened to the second park in Hong Kong, do you happen to have any infos on that? I always feel like having a second park is bound to have people stay longer and therefore be counted multiple times due to them visiting both parks.
Last thing I knew is that the goverment was unhappy with Disney postponing it and cancelled the priority option for Disney for that land, but I don't think it has been used since Covid.

I've got absolutely no idea what's now happening with the land for the second park. You're right that Disney lost the option to buy it (at a very low price considering land costs in Hong Kong) since they renewed the option so many times and wouldn't commit when the government gave them a deadline and no further extensions.

During COVID, the land was turned into a huge quarantine camp and those facilities are all still there.
