Paultons Park | Drakon | Gerstlauer Eurofighter | 2026

I’m here today. My mum and dad have deserted me to ride the train, so I’ve joined the queue again… first impressions from the first go are that it’s definitely the smoothest of the Euro-Fighters I’ve ridden, and that the stall is quite good, but that I definitely found it a bit of a thigh crusher restraints-wise and I don’t have vaguely large thighs.

I also stopped at the top of the lift hill on my first go, which was… interesting!

Can confirm it's smooth! Well done to everyone involved in the project

I hate to be negative about it but I genuinely can’t see how this is in anyway a good coaster.

Eurofighters are just not good and this layout also doesn’t look any good.

But Yay Paultons.
My thought is that despite my disappointment in the ride type compared to what could have been, it’s overall a fun coaster that I think the audience will enjoy. It’s not going to shatter your universe if you’ve ridden loads of coasters, and if you don’t enormously rate Euro-Fighters (as I don’t) I don’t see it converting you, but it is smooth for the ride type and the stall is genuinely quite good (or would be if it wasn’t for the restraints)

If it had lap bars, I’d rate it more highly. I found the OTSRs made the stall in particular quite uncomfortable, but it might not help that the operator seemed to put extra effort into stapling me in on all 3 of my rides…

As a coaster, Drakon is...fine.

It's a Eurofighter. Everyone here presumably has ridden one and knows what to expect.
It has quite a lot of laterals which did lead me to bump into the restraints. It is a smooth ride currently, so let's hope that doesn't develop into an issue. The stall is good fun.

It does seem like a good fit for the park. And between that and Storm Chaser they've got a perfect thrilling duo at the park.

The real win for Drakon, and Valgard more broadly, is the theming, style and overall atmosphere in the area. They've stepped up and smashed it out the park. It's a gorgeous area to be in and I really enjoyed my time just exploring the area. Vild Swing is a great addition. Raven breaths new life into the ride. The Feasting Hall looks gorgeous, and the Golden Apple drink is a fun themed food option.

I also adore that there's a 'sheep-powered wheel' that turns when the lift hill starts on Drakon. Such a cool effect.

Paultons clearly know who and what they are, and have carved out that niche. They are still a little rough round the edges and I still question some of their choices, but they're moving upwards constantly.

Oh, and Valgard has over 100 barrels in the area. It's great fun trying to find them all.

110 barrels to be precise!

I really enjoyed Drakon yesterday. I was perhaps in a minority of enthusiasts in that I was pretty happy with the Eurofighter choice when it was announced. A big step up in thrill and finally a custom layout coaster at Paultons!

It's smooth, has great interaction with Raven, and has a decent theming feature with the spinning wheel.

My minor gripe is that the ride area lacks path interaction to watch the ride, and it could benefit with some more theming features like tunnels or fire effects for added drama.

After coming home from Paultons, I've decided I'm going to take a stab at a slightly longer review of Valgard. Let me start with the area and wider theming...
The Area/Theming
Overall, I think they've done a lovely job with the area! The theming is all absolutely lovely, and they've finished it off very well! In terms of a few specific points of interest:
  • There are some very nice details around! One of my particular favourites was the sheep "powering" the lift hill for Drakon, but I thought that there was loads to look at!
  • As someone who wrote a post a few days ago remarking that Paultons' theming lacked theatre and pizzazz, I do have to concede that Drakon is somewhat of an improvement in this regard; I was particularly surprised by the pre-lift section, which is very nicely done!
  • People (myself included) griped for years about Cobra being unthemed and lacking atmosphere, and it looks a damn sight better now; they've done an absolutely brilliant job with Raven! Even just having the themed queue and station and little bits like the clock towers in the middle and the area around it has enhanced the overall atmosphere no end!
  • The Feasting Hall is an absolutely excellent indoor space, with some lovely details and a beautiful interior finish. I particularly liked the big fireplace and the big viking ship!
  • I didn't really notice The Edge not being cohesively themed in; as much as including it would have been nice, it's tucked away somewhat and I don't think it sticks out like too much of a sore thumb.
  • One minor gripe I would raise is that I think Drakon could maybe have used some theming that interacted slightly more with the ride and/or was slightly more visible to riders. When queueing, you can see some nice details in the ride area, including a shipwreck that lights up with some fake fire and some spikes, but I don't think these are terribly noticeable when on the ride; after the initial interaction with Raven, it does feel a tad like you're riding over some generic nice landscaping. I think more visible theming interactions from on-ride in the vein of Storm Chaser and Pterosaur in the same park or Raven in the same area, or Merlin coasters like Nemesis, Swarm and Wicker Man, might have been nice.
All in all, though, I think it's a lovely area and continues Paultons' streak of very nicely detailed and finished off areas. The park are certainly onto another winner alongside Lost Kingdom and Tornado Springs, and compared to an area like Drayton Manor's 2022 attempt at Vikings, I think it's absolutely night and day!

Let me now move onto the main event...
Drakon
I was highly critical of Paultons building a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter and have made no secret of the fact that it was far from my first choice of coaster for the park. Having ridden it, I do maintain that it maybe wouldn't have been my first choice and it has not converted me to Euro-Fighters as a ride type in a drastic way, but I acknowledge that it is a good coaster and I think it will go down well with the audience, and that I was perhaps overly harsh at points in the build-up period. To raise a few specific points of interest:
  • The stall does offer some very good hangtime. I'm quite surprised that Paultons went for such a dramatic inversion on their first ever inverting coaster, but I'm a fan of it and think it works well (or would if it weren't for the restraints... more on that later).
  • I always like the drop on these Gerstlauer Euro-Fighters, and this one is no exception; it offers some nice airtime!
  • The ride is definitely much smoother than I'd feared it might be; the tracking was generally very smooth throughout on my rides with minimal rattle or headbanging, although there were still odd sections where my head made mild, brief contact with the restraints.
  • The ride is perhaps the least intense of the Euro-Fighters I've ridden, and I wouldn't call it an especially forceful or impactful coaster on the whole even if I think the layout is mostly good fun. For the park, I think this works well, but I thought it was worth pointing out.
  • The first hill going over Raven doesn't really offer any notable airtime, which I was a little disappointed by. I understand that it probably had to be a certain height to clear Raven, but Gerstlauer, for all their flaws, are often quite good at injecting surprise airtime pops into their thrill coasters and a small part of me was hoping that it would be another surprise airtime burst from Gerst!
  • The ride also doesn't really have any airtime more widely aside from the drop, so doesn't continue Gerstlauer's tradition of incorporating good surprising airtime moments. I wasn't necessarily surprised by this given the layout, but I do think this is something that Saw, Speed and Smiler do better.
  • The main flaw I would raise, and a criticism that I 100% stand by from when the ride was initially announced, is that I think the OTSRs impede the ride and I would have preferred it with lap bars. On my 3 rides, I found that the OTSRs crushed my thighs and made the stall in particular somewhat uncomfortable. I begrudgingly accept the reasoning for OTSRs, but don't necessarily agree with the logic and think that some nice lap bars, as I know Gerstlauer offer, would definitely have made the ride more fun.
All in all, then, I think Drakon, while not my first choice, is a fun coaster that will suit the park well. It's a very welcome step up in thrill from Paultons Park, and I think the younger guests will like it! In terms of comparisons, it's currently my highest-ranking Gerstlauer thrill coaster for the reason that it's more comfortable to ride than the others, although as I said, it didn't convert me to Euro-Fighters in a drastic way and I've settled on a 6/10 and #49/148 overall. I still personally rank Pterosaur, Storm Chaser and Raven slightly higher within the park.

Finally, I'll briefly touch on Vild Swing...
Vild Swing
I'd never ridden one of these ART wild swings before, so I was interested to get on one for the first time. All in all, I'd say it was OK, but nothing to write home about as someone who's not a big fan of flat rides. The swinging is quite good fun, and early on, none of the sensations feel overly intense, but I would say that the cycle was maybe a bit long for me and I was starting to wear of the repetitive rotating motion by the end. If you’re keener on flats than I am, though, I think you’ll like it!

So all in all, then, I’d say Valgard is a great addition to Paultons Park! The theming is delightful, Drakon is overall a fun coaster that will suit the audience well, and if you’re more of a fan of flat rides than I am, then I think you’ll enjoy Vild Swing! I also think Serpent’s Curse looks like it will be a fun addition for next year!

To close out the review, here are a few photos I took throughout the day:

Valgard is a pretty solid addition to the park. We did not eat at the Feasting Hall but experienced all of the new rides.
Raven is what you would expect of a previously unthemed ride being given a new lease of life and a proper identity. The park did an excellent job and the queue is really nice. The ride still runs as good as it ever has been.
Drakon most notably lacks the path interactivity that Storm Chaser, Raven and Flight of the Pterosaur do, but the interaction with Raven is very brief but pretty cool. Theming is done pretty well and the queue gives you a neat angle of the ride. The coaster itself is very smooth, but unfortunately the twisty nature of the layout will send your head into the shoulder restraints on multiple occasions. The stall is by far the best part of the ride.
Vild Sving is the best new attraction in the area, and in my opinion, the new second best ride in the park after Storm Chaser. The onboard audio is there but very quiet, but these Wild Swing rides are fantastic attractions that absolutely deserve the success they are seeing. After watching the NebulaZ plague theme parks, it's refreshing to see another mass-cloned attraction that I'm actually willing to ride.
Valgard is nice but definitely lacks the completeness of an area like Tornado Springs, but hopefully Serpent's Curse fixes that. It's a real shame about the shoulder restraints on Drakon, because they completely ruin what would have otherwise been a very fun roller coaster.
Paultons Park continues to be the best-managed theme park in the UK, but I wouldn't say the best outright. I still don't feel a need to visit more than once every new coaster, but I respect what they go for.

We got our first look at Valgard today, not the best day to have gone due to it being quite hot and school holidays but we still had a great day.

Drakon: its....good, but probably my 3rd fave in the park. We had three rides and while smooth i felt the back outside seats were a bit headbangy, it also surprised me with its laterals and the stall is not my cup of tea. Theming is great and there is a bit of air but im still a bit miffed in the coaster choice, good for a Eurofighter but thats not a high bar.

Storm Chaser and Raven are my best in park and love what they have done to the latter.

Always liked it and now its had the glow up it deserves, Gerstlauer make fantastic family coaster 😅

Vild swing is a solid flat, kinda felt like a mini rush so quite sweet. The feasting hall is very well done, foods a bit expensive but the portions are decent and tbf everything tasted great. The Golden Apple Frost drink we as a group were split either to sweet and odd or yummy and refreshing.

With the heat today that water coaster can not come soon enough as there was a definite demand for water attractions.

Tornado Springs i think is still just about my preferred area but once the water coaster is in the land will be much more complete but its already a fantastically themed area.

I did notice compared to previous visits Pig Land is not as busy as normal and i feel guest are more evenly spread, instead of parents and their babys it feels they are drawing in a wider range of guests and even though there were way more people in the park than i have seen before they still had short queue times and great Ops throughout the day.

Finally first time on Ghostly Manor for us, its fun and unique but we could not get close to the high scores, felt we were missing something but just means will have to try again ☺️ But all in all great day at a great park.

I went to Paultons over the weekend. It was a cute little park, particularly for families with young children, but it does feel slightly like enthusiasts are a little “keen” in their praise for it. The rollercoasters are what they are - most of them focussed on a younger audience, and very short. Storm Chaser was fine, but didn’t spin much at all for me.

Drakon is actually a really interesting “gateway” ride for the audience and I was surprised that it was so popular with fairly young children, who seemed to really enjoy it. It was fun - again, very short - and has some nice moments (the stall in particular is a highlight). They really should’ve gone for lap bars instead of OTSRs though - it is pretty smooth, but there are still some jolts and wobbles.

I had an interesting experience coming back into the brake run on my last ride where a woman was sat on the floor right at the unload platform refusing to move - whilst it initially seemed that she was feeling sick, it instead transpired that she’d dropped her phone on the vertical lift, and she was refusing to leave the station until she got it back. This meant no trains could be cleared to move, putting Drakon out of action for about 30 to 45 minutes. She did eventually get the phone back after a staff member relented and went to get it (I hope it was smashed!), and she subsequently left the station covering her face and apparently feigning a head injury (presumably the phone she dropped was supposed to have hit her somehow), much to the bemusement of the medic who was called to attend to her. This then queued a longer inspection of bits of the ride system, before it could be cleared to open for the last 25 minutes or so of the day. Hopefully she was escorted from the park.

The Ghostly Manor thing is a very weird and interesting ride system - I quite enjoyed seeing that in action.

I have to pretty much completely agree with StevenX, I was there the weekend before last for a first ever visit. I'd held off due to Valgard and Drakon, tbf.

I think the hype for Paultons more comes from the operations, cleanliness, thought to guest experience (benches everywhere!), theming, things like that rather than how good the rides are. I would probably take Drayton's Gold Rush over most if not all of the coasters at Paultons.

I too wish Drakon had lap bars only, the shoulder bars are so wide that it's almost pointless and all it does is add something to tap against on the s-hills. Might get worse as the ride ages though. Also noticed the kids loved it. Definitely "that was scary but fun". Probably my favourite coaster in the park as I rode it the most but it's pretty close with Storm Chaser and maybe Raven (I saw the cobra at the brake run). For me Drakon was ok except for the always good beyond vertical drop and the awesome zero-g stall which was easily the best part of the ride. But again, we're not the target audience. Even though I saw a load of enthusiasts there.

On a side note is this the first "normal" zero-g stall in the UK? I class Hyperia's as a variation even though you stall out as it is more of a dive loop stall.
